Vintage Zippo Lighter 69-70 Viet Nam Cambodia US Military.
I believe this to be an authentic period-issue piece. Its case features a deep, crisp machine-stamping on the bottom rather than shallow or crude etching. It features the classic italicized Zippo script logo flanked by vertical bars. It shows 4 vertical bars (IIII) on the left and 4 vertical bars (IIII) on the right. Below that at the center bottom is “PAT. 2517191”. On the front of the lighter, the diamond insignia engraved on the front is the Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB) paired with the insignia of the 4th Infantry Division (“Ivy Division”). Inside the diamond are four stylized leaves pointing toward the corners, connected by a central ring. Above the diamond is “VIET NAM”, and below is “CAMBODIA”. During the 1969-1970 timeline, elements of the 4th Infantry Division were heavily engaged in the Central Highlands of Vietnam (near Pleiku) and were among the primary US conventional forces that launched directly into Cambodia during the May 1970 incursions. Engraved at the top front on the lid there is an image, behind which is displayed a stylized wreath, which mirrors the design of the Combat Infantry Badge. The lighter most likely would have belonged to a frontline combat infantryman serving with the 4th Infantry Division who personally participated in those intense cross-border operations into Cambodia.
This lighter came from the estate of a collector. It fires properly. It does have some cosmetic wear from use – some light scratching, wearing down of the finish, small indentations, and denting/nicks at the corners.
Please see our photos for further details and to help you in your own assessment of the lighter’s condition.
